Product Name: Black Flag Flying Insect Trap & Lure
Product Information: Due to the mild winter, many people will be looking for a way to control and eliminate insects without using harsh chemicals and unsightly bug zappers. Black Flag’s Flying Insect Trap is non-toxic and it blends into the backyard to attract bugs and NOT the unwanted attention of party guests.
Here are some all-natural ways to control insects while entertaining outdoors.
- Keep gutters clear and direct water from downspout’s away from your home.
- Cut back bushes and tree branches around your house.
- Clean up all pet and animal feces promptly.
- Dispose of kitchen scraps and other organic waste properly.
- If you have fruit trees in your yard, pick up any fruit that falls on the ground.
- Place lids on trash and recycling bins and move them away from the house.
- For creepy crawlers, fill mayonnaise sized jars with used coffee grinds and water. The scent will lure bugs in, and the water will drown them so they can’t get out.
- Cucumbers skins have an ingredient that repels bugs including ants, wasps, mites, moths, flies and other insects. Shred the cucumber skins and place them in planters and around the perimeter of the patio.
- In and around the patio plant types flowers and herbs that have natural insect repellent in their scent. Some examples: marigolds, rosemary, basil, thyme, Thai lemon grass, catnip, etc.
- Essential oils that have insect-repelling properties include eucalyptus, mint, peppermint, rosemary, lemongrass, clove, citronella and neem. In a spray bottle dilute these oils with rubbing alcohol or a carrier oil like jojoba oil, in a 1 to 10 part ratio.
My Thoughts: I know I am not alone in saying that I hate bugs! We recently moved from more of a woodsy area to the city. I was happy to leave a lot of the bugs behind. Of course the city has bugs too, but not as many! Every summer I had at least 2 black flies in the house at all times. Even the girls would grab the fly swatter to try to kill them. You can’t avoid it when you are in and out of the house all day long.
Well I’m happy to report I’ve had 2 black flies in the house all summer long!! (of course you know the minute I write this that will all change). It’s partly because of where we moved and because of the Black Flag insect trap I now have in my backyard! It’s great because it attracts the flies and then they get trapped inside so they stay away from us and the house. Of course it’s impossible to kill every bug and really we don’t want to but it’s nice to lessen the amount of them when you are outdoors a lot.
The trap is super easy to use. Just add the lure to the container with some water and hang it up. It takes about 2 days before it’s fully active and attracts the bugs. Then you just leave it there and either empty it when it’s full (that is my husband’s job because it’s pretty gross with all the dead bugs in it, but not much different from cleaning the pool filter) and then add another lure or if it dries out and isn’t full of bugs, you just add more water to reactivate! I was able to add water to it twice before it was full or I had to add another lure. We used the black fly one because we seem to have more flies than bees. I could have used the bee one in my old yard for sure. That would have filled up daily!
You can either hang it or it comes with a stack to put it in the ground. If you have both black flies and yellow jacks, I’d suggest putting two in your yard. Especially if you have kids. My girls were both stung by bees at the same time one summer, it was not fun for them or me.
Have you tried the Black Flag Flying Insect Trap & Lure? I’d love to hear your thoughts on it if you did!
