The rain is pouring, and your kids are bored. They’ve even started to eye your electronics with that look that says, “I’m going to touch this if you don’t do something soon.” Others can’t stand each other, and the constant sound of “Mooooom!” is driving you insane. What can you do to keep your kids occupied on a rainy day? Here are six rainy day projects to keep them busy and happy.

Make Homemade Crafts

Think of making rainy day crafts with recycled home items. The materials to use are probably already in your house. You can make a cardboard box into a rainy day fort or turn an old sock into a puppet. There are so many possibilities. You can even ask the kids for ideas.

Other options are animal masks, coffee filter butterflies, and marble fun. The list goes on and on. Just use your imagination, and you’ll come up with many possibilities. To make the event successful, collect the materials you’ll need ahead of time and put them in a special rainy day box. Teach the kids how to use the materials safely, and watch as they create masterpieces.

Put on a Show

Children love to perform, whether it’s a dance recital, fashion show or magic act. It’s a great way to burn off energy on a rainy day. Get some music, and let them put on a show for you. If you have a video camera, tape it so they can watch themselves later. You can even use some of the crafts they made as props. For an excellent show, choose age-appropriate activities. For instance, put on a puppet show for younger kids or let the older ones have a talent show. Also, do something the children love. Let them choose their clothes or put on costumes for the fashion show. If they’re into acting, let them make up their skit. The options are limitless.

Read Stories Together

Rainy days are the perfect opportunity to cuddle up with your child and read stories. If you don’t have children’s books, visit the library,  borrow some from a friend or make up your own stories. You can also find children’s books online.

Make the experience even more special with popcorn and hot chocolate. Then, snuggle up under a blanket together and enjoy the stories.

Do Some Baking

Baking is a great rainy day activity, especially if you have younger children. They’ll love getting their hands dirty while they make delicious treats. You’ll love that they’re doing something constructive with their time.

To make the experience even more fun, let them choose the recipes and help with the baking. Just supervise closely, so they don’t hurt themselves or make a mess. Let the older kids measure the ingredients while the younger ones mix them. Then, everyone can decorate their cookies or cupcakes.

Make a Movie

Making movies is a great rainy day project for kids. They can use their imaginations to come up with all sorts of storyline ideas. Provide the props, costumes, and camera.

First, help them write a script and then let them act out their parts. Finally, film it and watch the final product together. If you have the time and patience, edit the film and add special effects.

Play Board Games

Board games are always a good option on a rainy day. They’re not only fun, but they’re also educational. Choose age-appropriate games that will challenge the kids without being too complicated. Some good options are Candyland, Chutes and Ladders, Monopoly Jr., and Sorry.

You can even choose to compete, adding more fun and excitement to the game. The important thing is to spend time together and enjoy yourselves.

Use Your Imagination

There’s so much to try and many ways to have fun on a rainy day. By planning, you’ll make sure the kids are entertained and occupied. Just use your imagination, and you’ll devise many fun projects to keep them busy. So, don’t let it ruin your day the next time it rains. Instead, use it as an opportunity to bond with your children and create lasting memories.
