We are a big Disney family and my oldest daughter is fascinated with Walt Disney and even did a report on him for school.  She so wishes she could have met him and I can’t say I don’t blame her.  He just sounds like such an amazing man!   When I first heard about Saving Mr. Banks and that Tom Hanks was going to play Walt Disney, I knew it was a good choice.    After watching the movie 3 times now, I still think he was the best choice to play Walt.

About Saving Mr. Banks

Tom Hanks and Emma Thompson bring to life the untold true story about the origins of one of the most treasured Disney classics of all time.  John Lee Hancock (The Blind Side) directs this acclaimed film, which reveals the surprising backstory behind the making of Mary Poppins.  Determined to fulfill a promise to his daughters, Walt Disney (Hanks) tries for twenty years to obtain the rights to author P.L. Travers’ (Thompson) beloved book.  Armed with his iconic creative vision, Walt pulls out all the stops, but the uncompromising Travers won’t budge.  Only when he reaches into his own complicated childhood does Walt discover the truth about the ghosts that haunt Travers, and together, the set Mary Poppins free.

Before I saw the movie I heard mixed reviews from friends and family.  I was shocked because some people absolutely loved it and others didn’t.  But I had to see it for myself and right before it left theaters I did.  Well add me to the group of people who loved it because I certainly did!  This movie isn’t about Walt.  Yes, he’s in there and has some great parts but it’s not about him.  It’s about a woman who is having a hard time letting go of something in her past, and she’s very unhappy.   Walt plays a roll in  helping her to free her past and move forward.  The movie almost has two stories going on at once but in the end it all ties together.  Perhaps this is why some didn’t like it?  But I thought it was amazing.

This is one of my favorite clips in the movie:

And now you can own it on Blu-ray and DVD because it’s in stores now!    And of course there are lots of bonus features on it, which we watched first.  It’s always our favorite part.

Bonus Materials:

  • The Walt Disney Studios: From Poppins to Present (Blu-ray & Digital HD) – Join Director John Lee Hancock on a tour of the Disney Studios lot, reflect on studio life during the making of Mary Poppins, and discover how Walt’s creative spirit still flourishes today.

  • Deleted Scenes
    • Stargaze (Blu-ray & Digital HD) – A picture on Walt’s desk leads to a flashback of Pamela’s childhood.
    • Nanny Song (Blu-ray, DVD & Digital HD) – The Sherman Brothers perform a song for Pamela that she is less than thrilled with.
